to Housing
Ship Street Apartments is named as an ode to the Ballard neighborhood’s history. The 22-unit project is a quintessential example of infill development. Built on a 5,000 square foot, mid-block lot, the project takes a unique approach to design. Instead of a solid building with double loaded corridors, Ship Street activates the center of the site by providing exterior circulation elevated over a central courtyard. The exterior walkways and stairs allow light and air to pass through the site and provide community spaces that activate the courtyard below. The building was completed in early 2018 and appraised at $2m more than cost. Occupancy has remained in the high 90s. Ship Street was nominated for an AIA award in 2017.
